Multi-LocationRig Deployment for
Unocal Corporation,
Indonesia and Malaysia
Project Characteristics:
    • Real-time environmental monitoring system
    • Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)
    • SeaPac 2200 Non-Directional Wave Gauge
    • Windows 95 PC-based data acquisition system
WoodsHole Group (WHG) designed, built, tested and installed real-time environmentalmonitoring systems on Sedco 601 and Sedco 602 anchored drill rigs, operatingin the Makasar Strait region, east of Borneo, Indonesia.  Eachof the two identical systems consists of a downward-looking 75 kHz BroadbandAcoustic Doppler Current Profiler suspended below the surface, togetherwith an upward-looking RD Instruments Workhorse 300 kHz ADCP and a WHG/WHISLSeaPac 2200 Non-Directional Wave Gauge.  An RM Young meteorologicalsystem measuring wind, speed and direction, air temperature, and barometrictemperature is also included in each system. WHG designed and providedthe software for a Windows 95 PC-based data acquisition system on eachrig, which shows the data in a multiplicity of formats and provides dailyarchival data files, similar to the displays on the Sedco 601 and 602. These systems were installed on the Sedco 601 and Sedco 602 beginning inthe summer of 1998 and have collected data at numerous sites in the MakasarStraits.  The system on the Sedco 602 is no longer operational, becauseUnocal no longer has the rig under contract.  Under a continuing servicecontract, WHG engineers and technicians provide periodic service for therig-based systems on approximately a quarterly basis.  Woods HoleGroup is also providing on-going data QA, processing, and reporting ona quarterly basis.

Previously, Woods Hole Groupdesigned, built, tested and installed a real-time environmental monitoringsystem for use on the Sedco 601 anchored drill rig, operating in the AndamanSea region, west of the Straits of Malacca, Indonesia.  The systemconsisted of a downward looking 75 kHz Narrow Band Acoustic Doppler CurrentProfiler suspended below the surface.  WHG designed and provided thesoftware for a Windows 95 PC-based data acquisition system on the rig, which displays the data and provides daily archival data files.  Thissystem was installed on the Sedco 601 beginning in late 1997, and continuedto operate until April 1998 when the ADCP was damaged by operations onthe rig.  WHG provides installation and maintenance services for thesystems out of Thailand and Indonesia.

Under a continuing servicecontract, Woods Hole Group engineers and technicians provided periodicservice for the rig-based system while it was operational, and also provideddata QA, processing, and reporting.
