Woods Hole Group designed and installed two real-time Lake Current Monitoring Systems in late 1996 and early 1997 at the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations on Lake Ontario, operated by Ontario Power Generation, Inc. Each system includes a bottom platform with an upward looking Acoustic Current Doppler Profiler (ADCP), an environmentally- protected Remote System Manager (RSM), and a Base Station computer system and display software.  The ADCP systems are installed about a mile offshore, and current data are transmitted to shore over a double-armored electro-mechanical cable. At the shore the RSM collects and buffers the data, and transmits it to the utility company’s home office over a land telephone line.

At the engineering office, a software package developed by Woods Hole Group, receives data from the RSM, processes the data into engineering units, archives the data and displays the data as time histories, vertical profiles, and tabulated averages of current velocity.  Data are also made available on Ontario-Hydro's Local Area Network, and can be accessed remotely via modem for diagnostic purposes.
