The Unocal Ocean Baroness Integrated Real-time Monitoring System (IRMS) is a distributed data acquisition and display system connected to the LAN. The system consist of one primary IRMS PC, a secondary PC and a Terminal server for interfacing with the Aandera wind sensor data, DGPS and Gyro located in the Pilothouse.

The LAN may be restricted to a single physical facility (for example, an exploration rig), or it may extend across several facilities using Wide Area Network (WAN) technology, such as microwave or radio Ethernet bridges.

The IRMS system also serves as the main archival system for environmental and operating condition data from the Ocean Baroness.

Other Unocal-supplied PCs are attached to the Unocal LAN may be operated as IRMS display stations, each PC receiving data over the LAN can produce its own displays and record data. These other Unocal PCs may be dedicated to IRMS displays, or the IRMS software may be run on general workstations that are used for other functions as well.

The primary data sources for the system are two Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. Theses ADCPs are mounted, upward and downward looking, in a cage and deployed over the side using a hydraulic A-frame. The secondary data sources are an Aandera wind speed measurement system and a FUGRO DGPS with GYRO.
