| June 12, 2002 East Falmouth,
MA -- Woods Hole Group has created a real-time data acquisition and
telemetry system for the National Marine Fisheries Service to use in its
surveys of marine life. In June the marine consulting company installed
its Survey Sensor Package (SSP) on an NMFS clam dredge attached to the
research ship Delaware II out of Woods Hole, MA. The SSP logs the
date from various sensors that measure water temperature, ambient pressure,
dredge pump manifold pressure, pump voltage and the pitch and roll of the
dredge. Once every second, the SSP collects data from the sensors and,
when above water, uses a radio link to transmit the data to a personal
computer aboard ship.
Housed in a cylinder 8 inches in diameter and 27 inches long, the SSP time-stamps every measurement, reducing by several months the work it would otherwise take to manually match up the data to sampling sites. In its biological survey work in population dynamics, NMFS dredges for clams every three years. Possible future uses for the SSP include additional clam surveys aboard commercial clam dredges, and perhaps on a scallop dredge. The SSP will also be useful for other NMFS surveys and long-term monitoring projects. Woods Hole Group is an oceanographic consulting company that solves
problems affecting the marine environment throughout the world.
