The Winthrop Shores Reservation Restoration Program is part of the “Back to the Beaches” program intended to restore the beaches of Boston Harbor. The Winthrop Shores Program encompasses two of the five north beaches, Winthrop Beach and Short Beach. The plan for the north beaches is to improve the infrastructure and environment, and develop a network of connections between the beaches and adjacent resources, such as the Belle Island Marsh Reservation. A major component of the Winthrop Shores Program includes improvements to Winthrop Beach to improve storm protection and enhance recreational usage. Woods Hole Group has been contracted to recommend a conceptual design for the beach projects. In order to develop these recommendations, a number of coastal processes analyses and field data collection tasks are required, such as: wave data analysis and refraction/ diffraction modeling, sediment transport modeling, evaluation of potential offshore sand borrow sites, and biological resource assessments. Woods Hole Group is part of a team focused on addressing these issues for the project. We also will support the environmental permitting process for the recommended project. Of primary significance to the Holly Beach Project are the offshore breakwaters at Winthrop Beach (the “Five Sisters” shown in the photograph).

One of the key components of the project is to evaluate the historical effect of these breakwaters, how these breakwaters are likely to affect future beach replenishment projects, and whether modifications to the structure are required. Our demonstrated experience with this type of analysis will benefit the Holly Beach Project.
