Artificial Headland Evaluation and Conceptual Design for
Jupiter Island, Florida
Project Characteristics:
    • Coastal structures
    • Erosional hot-spots
    • Shoreline change modeling (GENESIS)
..........................................................
Artificial headlands were designed to provide stability to erosional “hot-spots” along the coast of Jupiter Island.  The study included an engineering evaluation and an economic analysis of artificial headlands at three locations within the limits of the Town.  Since the headlands were designed to accompany a large-scale beach nourishment project, economic benefits were based on estimated cost savings from reduced future beach nourishment frequency.

Headlands were recommended for erosional hot-spots only, and were not presented as a general solution for the entire 15-mile length of Jupiter Island.  Specifically, the analysis focused on the performance of one, two, and three headlands in the vicinity of the Beach Club.  Headlands stabilize the beach in a progressive fashion: originally covered by an abundance of sand, the headlands gradually would become more active as erosion progresses at the hot-spots (locations where historic annual erosion rates have exceeded 15 feet per year).  The headlands would control the erosion of adjacent beaches, increasing the life of the nourishment at the hot-spot, while minimizing downdrift starvation.  The goal of artificial headland implementation is to maintain a stable beach at the hot-spot for the design life of the surrounding beach nourishment.

The conceptual design process consisted of in-depth shoreline change modeling (GENESIS), incorporating appropriate structural representations of the artificial headland structures.  Permeability of the structures was utilized to “tune” the shore-perpendicular portion of the artificial headlands with regard to littoral drift.  In this manner, downdrift impact of the groin-like structures could be minimized.
